Description
Scope/Content: Similar photo in “Beach Rat Pix”, p. 31: “The ‘Sunshine’, first live bait boat to run on daily schedule from Newport Pier in the mid-1920s … The ‘Sunshine’ soon had competition from the ‘Valencia’ but business prospered and soon there were three Sunshines and three Valencias operating. Fishing was good. It was a natural thing for groups of people to want boats to themselves, so, the charter fleet started. When a report came of a harbor being developed at Dana Point it would mean that the boats could leave from there without making the long boat ride from Newport Beach. Now [1974] there is a harbor at Dana Point but not that terrific fishing the Sunshine and Valencia fleets enjoyed in the 1920s and ‘30s. Dana Point is practically fished out.”
