Description
Scope/Content: Oral history of Minh Nguyen, a mechanic who now resides in various parts in Orange County, California. He was born on August 3, 1964 in Vietnam. He discusses how the Vietnam war did not affect his family much, because of their good family name. He also talks about his fondest memories with his parents while they were living in South Vietnam. Mr. Nguyen also talks about his first arrival to the United Staes, and how he had to start working two part time jobs.
Scope/Content: The Natalie Newton Class Oral Histories, 2012 subcollection are part of an introductory course on the development of Vietnamese communities in the United States, with particular focus on Orange County’s Little Saigon community. This course will engage you in examining the demographic, social, and economic trends and issues confronting contemporary Vietnamese American communities. We will use the contextual lenses of race, ethnicity, culture, class, gender, sexuality, and religion to explore the major issues affecting Vietnamese Americans, including topics such as immigration, resettlement and adaptation, labor, discrimination and racism, community development, individual and social identity, family and generational issues, education, health, public policy agendas, political participation and activism, media representation, and knowledge and cultural production.
