Description
Scope/Content: An Oral history of Tracy Ta, born on August 4, 1959 in Vietnam. At the time of interview, she gives a biographical information about herself. She describes her parents, their occupations, and her seven siblings. She then shares that she graduated high school under the communist regime. She also opens up to how the Vietnam War affected her life, and what her family had done to protect themselves during the Tet Offensive. Last, she shares about her experience immigrating to America, such as the hardships in adapting to her new lifestyle, how she felt about the American people, how she met her husband, and how she keeps in touch with some family members that live in Vietnam. Materials restricted until 2032-05-01.
Scope/Content: The Natalie Newton Class Oral Histories, 2012 subcollection are part of an introductory course on the development of Vietnamese communities in the United States, with particular focus on Orange County’s Little Saigon community. This course will engage you in examining the demographic, social, and economic trends and issues confronting contemporary Vietnamese American communities. We will use the contextual lenses of race, ethnicity, culture, class, gender, sexuality, and religion to explore the major issues affecting Vietnamese Americans, including topics such as immigration, resettlement and adaptation, labor, discrimination and racism, community development, individual and social identity, family and generational issues, education, health, public policy agendas, political participation and activism, media representation, and knowledge and cultural production.
