Description
Scope/Content: An oral history with Mr. Robert Thieu Vu, born on Christmas 1962 in Ba Ria, South Vietnam. Due to his father being in the army and his mother serving as a cook for the American soldiers, he believed he had no other choice but to flee Vietnam. After a couple of failed attempts and 2 years in reeducation camp, Mr. Vu successfully escaped Vietnam by boat. He arrived at Pulau Bidong Refugee Camp in Malaysia in 1983 where he began learning English. Later, Mr. Vu was accepted by the American Delegation and was transferred to another refugee camp in Malaysia called Sungei Bishi where he became a translator for a doctor in the baby clinic. In 1984, Mr. Vu was again transferred to Morong Bataan Refugee Camp in the Philippines where he was required to go to school and learn how to adapt and live in the United States. There, he was a translator for an English class as well as an advisor for the post office. He arrived in America in 1985 and currently resides in Anaheim, California working as a mechanic in an auto shop that he owns in Fullerton, California. Mr. Vu states that although he has had to work hard his entire life, he is happy with where he is now and is eternally grateful to live in a country that has granted him the opportunity to rebuild his life after being forced to flee his home country.
