Description
Scope/Content: Mr. Tam Van Mong was born in 1962 in Ha Tien, Vietnam. The interview focuses on his life before, during, and after the war. He shares his life as a child growing up in Vietnam and watching his country fall apart. Amid the chaos and uncertainty, his family urged him to leave by boat when he was 15 years old and prepared him for the journey in 1978. During his boat escape to Leam Sing Thailand Refugee Camp, he was attacked by Thai pirates several times and survived. Three days later, after arriving at the camp, he reflects on his 14-month experience there. His loneliness was a shared sentiment among other Vietnamese refugees, but his sense of brotherhood was renewed and reinforced his spirits. Life in the United States when he arrived in 1980 was difficult because he had to support himself and had to choose between work and school. Eventually, life got better and he was excited to share his story. He currently lives with his second wife and two children.
